Testing Sessions

Help to improve the draft NSW Health Consumer
and Carer Engagement Framework

Update: All of sessions are full - thank you for your interest in supporting this work. 👏🏼 If you’d like to be involved in future activities with NSW Health, complete this form.

Background 📝

NSW Health is creating a state-wide Consumer and Carer Engagement Framework. The framework won’t replace local health district or agency-specific frameworks. It will set a whole-of-system standard of good engagement and show NSW Health staff different ways of working with consumers and carers. So far, the framework includes:

  • guiding principles

  • tools and processes

  • barriers and enablers to good engagement

  • engagement options.

NSW Health and Beyond Sticky Notes are leading this work with the support of several working groups made up of consumers, carers, NSW Health staff and provocateurs from Victoria and Queensland. This project builds on existing engagement research, frameworks and tools.

Here’s some more information. Or, if you’d prefer to talk to a real person, please contact KA from Beyond Sticky Notes at kellyann@beyondstickynotes.com.

When are the sessions? 🗓

There are four virtual sessions between the 13th and 20th of September 2022. You only need to attend one. Here are the times and dates. If you have already registered and can’t find your invite, or have questions contact KA at kellyann@beyondstickynotes.com.

Each session can take 40 participants - please register in advance. The sessions are virtual to ensure people from across NSW can attend and we have prioritised safe access to community members who cannot attend in-person events.

What will the sessions involve? 🗳

Each session will run for two hours. You’ll try out the framework through a series of activities and scenarios. You’ll also learn how the framework was designed. The scenarios will help us to test whether the framework works across different contexts, if the language makes sense, and to help you find anything we’ve missed.

We’ll also be getting feedback on the visual design of the framework using mood boards (example pictured).

Who can attend? What’s expected of me? 🤷

Sessions are open to NSW-based consumers, carers, interested community members, NSW Health staff and consumer peak bodies. We’re looking for constructive input from different people in different places. All attendees must follow our Code of Care. For the virtual sessions, you’ll need access to a stable internet connection and a keyboard to add to the chat if you don’t have a camera or microphone. A camera is helpful, not mandatory.

Will I be paid for my time? 💸

Carers, consumers and community members who are not employed by NSW Health (or an organisation funded by NSW Health) can choose to be paid $80 for their time (2 hours). Payment will be provided after the session as a voucher.

What’s the purpose of these sessions? 🎯

While many people’s perspectives and existing research has gone into creating the framework, we need to test the framework to see if it’s useful and if people understand it. If not, we need to make changes. We want to understand:

  • Does the framework make sense to staff and consumers?

  • Does the framework help staff and consumers understand what to expect across common activities?

  • Is the framework flexible enough to be used and adapted across different contexts (e.g. redevelopment, research, redesign) and communities?

  • Does the framework set clear accountabilities for the NSW Health system? (for example, around recognising consumer and carers’ time)

  • Any other feedback you’d like to share with us

How will my feedback be used? 💬

Some or all of your feedback will be used to improve the framework. Some of your suggestions might be more than what we can do immediately, so we’ll save those changes for future work (such as training or an expanded framework). If you attend the sessions, we’ll let you know in the months afterwards what changes we did and didn’t make and why. Our working groups will help us decide how to act on your feedback.

Who is running the sessions? !?

We are! We’re external facilitators who specialise in co-design and online facilitation.

I want to give my feedback, but I can’t make a session; what can I do?

We’ll be sharing a written and visual draft of the framework for feedback later this year. If you’d prefer to give your feedback that way, let us know here.

I have accessibility needs. How will they be accommodated? 🪜

When you register, we’ll ask about your access needs. Then, we’ll do our best to make the session as inclusive as possible. That might require a conversation with you. To ensure our communities are protected, most of our sessions are virtual.
